Unauthorised access to land

Please beware that current incidences of unauthorised access to land are increasing locally (especially during the summer months). These may include problems with - unauthorised encampments, fly tipping, abandoned and burnt out cars, illegal off road driving and general trespass in the District. Please take all reasonable precautions to secure land. If you would like further advice on this then please feel free to email jpimley@westberks.gov.uk with your details.

This is a message for NHW and Community members about Rouge Traders.

Information has just been issued about a couple of scams that have been highlighted recently involving cold calling via the telephone.

The first involves a company claiming to represent 'Neighbourhood Watch Support' who are trying to get people to advertise in a Neighbourhood Watch brochure they claim is going out to all local residents. There is no such organisation as 'neighbourhood Watch Support' If you have any concerns, questions or issues that you would like to raise relating to this please call the following number 0116 229 3118 or e-mail enquiries@nationalnhw.org

Information about the second incident has come from a NHW co-ordinator who was contacted by a male on the phone claiming to work for a company who fix computers. He stated that a lot of the computers in the area had been infected with a virus and he could help fix the problem by getting you to download his software (which would then infect your computer!)
<BR! /Telephone calls such as the above two incidents should be treated the same as you would for anyone cold calling at your door. Do not agree to anything over the phone. Be polite just say 'no thank you' and put the phone down.

Attempted Abduction Update from Thames Valley Police
Thames Valley Police would like to reassure residents in West Berkshire following reports of suspicious men being seen outside schools.
In the past two weeks, police have received seven reports of men acting suspiciously around schools in the district.
All of these incidents have been fully investigated and no offences have been discovered.
However we would urge people to report anything suspicious to us, even if it turns out to be completely innocent as we would rather hear about it and investigate it just in case.
Anyone who does want to report any concerns to police should contact 0845 8 505 505.

Neighbourhood Watch

A while ago we informed you that the Home Office had introduced a new  self-assessment tool to help people check their home security.  An on-line questionnaire ' How Safe is Your  Home' is available and takes approximately. 3 minutes to complete.  If you haven't already completed the questionnaire please visit: www.homeoffice.gov.uk/secureyourhome/questionnaire/form/php

There is also a FREE advice pack available from the Home Office which contains burglary leaflets, discount vouchers on home security products from some leading DIY stores and details of the Policing Pledge.
This pack contains a copy of the Home Security Self Assessment questionnaire, for  those of you who are unable to carry it out online.

Only one pack will be issued per person, so each NHW member will have to order their own pack.  To do so call the Home Office Publications Department FREE on 0800 456 1213.
